Tisá Walls
The Protected Country region Labské pískovce (The Elbe Sandstone Rocks) is a part of an extensice sandstone plateau that originated about 90 million years ago in the Cretaceous Mesozoic period. When the sea covering the northern part of the country retreated it left here layers of sandstone sediments cemented with kaolin, clay and other material. In the course of time the movement of the crust of the earth resulted in cracking of these sediments. Further gradual weathering, erosion, and the drifting away of materials resulted in richly diversified area of deep canyons and vertical walls covered by pictoresque shapes. The most western part of Labské pískovce (The Elbe Sandstone Rocks) are Tiské stěny (The Tisá Walls) called after the nearby village Tisá. A massive rock wall is towering above the north end of Tisá, rising up to 70 meters. The Tisá Walls measure 613 meters at their highest point. They continue eastward for almost a kilometer where they end at the Tourist Chalet. We can come here across all forms of sandstone rocks. There are massive rock faces as well as isolated towers and narrow needles. They offer many ascents, more or less difficult ones, to the beginning as well as experienced mountain climbers. Group of towershaped formations resemble fortifications and care called castles. Narrow defiles run between the rock faces and there are wild gorges and ravines. You come across "boulder seas" caused by folding rock, with some boulders of magnificient size. Two marked foot paths originate at the entrance to the Tisá Walls which is called Skalní náměstí (Rock Square).
Děčínský Sněžník
Our highest mesa with an observation tower (723 m. n. m).
At a height of 723 meters, Děčínský Sněžník rieses about the town of Děčín. It is located on the highest mesa in the country. There is a view tower on the mountian with the same name as the mountain itself, Děčínský Sněžník. Děčínský Sněžník is attractive not only for the magical view of Lužické mountains and Czech Saxon Switzerland but also for its unique air quality. Thanks to the thermal air currents around the mesa, the local air mixes with winds blown in from the north sea. The dry thermals mixed with the fresh sea air make for an especially healthy air quality. The local people refer to the area as an "air spa" In 1864 František Thun had the tower built according to the plans of architect Hanel. At its beginning it was built for geographical purposes. It was used by surveyors from Austria, Prussia and Saxony. With the increase of tourism Count Thun decided to open the view tower to tourists and he hired a guard to collect an entrance fee. As time passed, the view tower became very popular and a restaurant was built.

For a long long time the scenery was evolving apart from the world around, untouched by a man´s hand. That´s why we can nowadays enjoy the beauty around and feel like in a fairy tale. Along the state boundary on its south side the national park Saxon Switzerland melts into the national park Czech Switzerland. The region of Saxon Switzerland is considered as the first region in Europe where the tourism started to work. Due to the long tradition of the tourism, you can expect a high quality service in the region. There are many quality hotels and pensions of higher standard there. The biggest attractions of the area are the touristic trails of a different difficulty leading through the scenery of the rocky towns, the mesas, the passes, deep gorges and hillsides. The whole area is a paradise for the rock climbers. You don´t have to be a member of any climbing club to be allowed to climb up the rocks. You can enjoy your trip visiting any of the big castles in the surrounding area, e.g. Konigstein – the largest rocky town in Europe. The boat rides through the huge canyon of high sandstone´ rocks lining the Elbe river are also very catching. You can get as far as Dresden..
